West Yellowstone Compost Facility-Transfer Station
The West Yellowstone/Hebgen Basin area of Montana is a place like no other. Bordering the incredible Yellowstone National Park to the east and surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges in all other directions, the area is a paradise for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities.
There are two annual peak visitor seasons in the region. During the summer months, the area’s population increases dramatically when up to 3 million tourists visit Yellowstone National Park. In addition, each year thousands of hikers, bikers, campers, fishermen, etc. use the local forests and waterways. Winter brings the snowmobile and cross-country ski crowds to West Yellowstone.
The region’s remote location and dramatic peaks in population has made waste disposal a challenge. The West Yellowstone/Hebgen Basin Solid Waste District Board administers waste collection and disposal in the area, which includes the waste generated in Yellowstone National Park. The District Board is appointed by the Gallatin County Commission.
Please see the attached "History of Garbage Disposal in West Yellowstone" for a more detailed glimpse of the efforts to be good stewards of the land surrounding Yellowstone National Park.
PLEASE NOTE THE COMPOST FACILITY CEASED OPERATIONS 11/22.
