Addressing Services

General Information

The Gallatin County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division is responsible for issuing addresses in the unincorporated areas of Gallatin County. Bozeman, Belgrade, and Three Forks are incorporated cities that issue their own addresses. Make sure you are aware of the jurisdiction of the property to be addressed before proceeding with the instructions below. The GIS Office issues official physical addresses in accordance with the Gallatin County Addressing and Road Naming Policies and Procedures Manual. The postal community and zip code are provided by the United States Postal Service (USPS), the GIS Division only manages physical addresses and cannot effect changes to postal communities or zip codes. Effective as of June 6, 2022, the fee for obtaining an address has increased from $15 to $40. Instructions on how to request and obtain an address in-person or remotely are provided in the next section below. Here are some additional important pieces of information about obtaining an address assignment:

  • Addressing off of un-named roads: in some cases, a road name may need to be assigned for an unnamed road before an address can be assigned. See Road Naming for more information.
  • Address changes: if you believe that you need an address change, please speak with the Address Coordinator by submitting an email to gis[at]gallatin.mt.gov or call the GIS Division number.
  • Encroachment permit: If your planned driveway is a new access off a County maintained road, an approach permit will be required and reviewed by the Gallatin County Road & Bridge Department.
  • Addressing fee: $40 per address (effective June 6, 2022 per Resolution 2022-074)
